Boosting Recycling – How a Deposit Return Scheme works

The main purpose of the Return for Change campaign is to promote the introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Ireland and in order to really set out on this journey with our best foot forward, we have organised a webinar with some stellar guests. This event will take place via Zoom on Thursday 10th June from 3.00pm – 4.00pm (details below). The purpose is to give our audience the chance to listen to a range of speakers, all of whom have different experiences of a DRS.

First up we have Minister of State for Communications and the Circular Economy, Ossian Smyth. He has been a TD since 2020 and will be able to offer a unique perspective as to what the Government is hoping to achieve with the introduction of the DRS. With specific regard to his responsibility for the Circular Economy, it promises to make for a fascinating insight into what he hopes a DRS can provide in that regard.

We will also be joined by a representative from Have You Got The Bottle (HYGTB), Scotland. They began their own journey toward the introduction of a DRS many years ago and so are a good deal further down that line than Ireland. We hope to hear about the various challenges and obstacles they have overcome along the way and what, if anything, we in Ireland can learn from them. After all, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel.

We are also delighted to welcome Carrickmacross Tidy Town – the true DRS pioneers of Ireland! Fed up with looking at the bottles and cans littering their community, they decided to take the initiative and set up their own bespoke DRS in Carrickmacross. With the backing of their local Supervalu and Shabra Recycling, they successfully operates their own Deposit Return/Reward & Recycle Scheme from October 2019 until last year. Theirs is a first-hand account of how this system can work within a community setting.

Last but certainly not least, VOICE’s very own Mindy O’Brien will speak. VOICE has been advocating for the introduction of a DRS for over a decade and Mindy has been very much front and centre in this regard. She has a wealth of experience in all things ‘waste’ and will speak about her hopes for the DRS in Ireland and how she sees it as the first step in a grand journey toward a waste-free Ireland.

The webinar is free and we would love if you could attend. Please see the details and we hope that we will see you there.
